A Little Introduction
The sad but honest truth is that a lot of western societies were once at the point Nigeria is in terms of stigmatization of art as a profession. Many years ago, the jobs we now consider prestigious here were also revered in western societies. If you weren't a stock broker on Wall Street or a brain surgeon or a teacher and so on, you weren't acknowledged but with the rise of Hollywood and its influence, people began to see that maybe art as a profession isn't so bad after all.
This same train of thought is common with a lot of young people in Nigeria today especially Lagos and that is how the idea for the Candid Club was born. The Candid Club is a not-for-profit social group based in Lagos, Nigeria where movie lovers alike come together to watch thought provoking and sometimes mind boggling films, analyze and discuss and try as best as possible to relate it to our society today where appropriate.
We have a lot of artists and people working in film as members but also members with regular office jobs. We, however, all share one common passion which is our love of film as an artform and a medium for expression of all kinds and we hope this blog and the reviews we give will help people to appreciate the art of cinema/film and help them to make better creative choices in their own art and maybe develop a passion for film just like us at the Candid Club.
We at the Candid Club show unconventional (sometimes arthouse) films that may not have been released theatrically or may have had a limited cinema release. These films a lot of the time are low budget (this term has gotten a bad rap because of the terrible low budget horror movies that started to find their way into pop culture a while ago) and tend to focus a lot on the actual portrayal of things than say, the environment in the movie or the imagery (CGI etc). So welcome once again to our blog and we look forward to sharing our thoughts and opinions with you guys!
Enjoy!
